Toronto's Yonge Street - Yonge and Dundas to Yonge and Bloor

1 block North of Dundas on Yonge Street, just does not seem to me the same without the good old Sam The Record Man store at Yonge and Gould. Sam The Record Man was truly a Toronto Landmark, with its spinning records neon sign. In June 2007 this Canadian landmark closed down after over 40 years at Yonge and Gould.

The HMV music store about 70 meters south on Yonge on the same side of the street as the old Sam the Record Man may help fill the void created by the closing of Sam’s but does not quite do it.

6 doors north of the old Sam’s is Play de Record, music store which is pretty cool. It has lots of music geared towards DJ’s and people like me who like House. Play de Record has all different types of cool music including Hip Hop. I believe music is always cool to pick up in the different city’s you visit.

Next to Play de Record is Zanzibar, a strip joint in Toronto. Yes, Toronto has Strip joints and however I may feel about strip joints I feel a need to mention it, since Zanzibar is probably another Toronto Landmark. It seems that it has been located on Yonge Street forever to me.

Just North of Zanzibar on the other side of Yonge Street is Swiss Chalet. Swiss Chalet is pretty popular in Toronto, for good food that is reasonably priced. Swiss Chalet became popular serving roasted chicken.

As you keep going North on Yonge Street you will find lots of Toronto restaurants, many of them serving Asian food, places to buy electronics and Canadian souvenirs. There are things too like Jewelry in case you get inspired to propose to your significant other while wandering Yonge Street.

By the way, no fear if you are addicted to caffeine, as there is quite a few Starbucks on Yonge Street.

Across the street from the Starbucks at Yonge and Charles is a Shoppers Drug Mart, which is one of the largest drug stores chains in Toronto. It has pretty much whatever you might have forgotten at home that you need in the way of toiletries, make-up, magazines, hair dryers, and Ibuprofen. Just west of this Starbucks on Charles is 7 West. 7 West is a cool looking restaurant which is open 24 hours a day. If I were a tourist in Toronto, or a local trying to party in downtown Toronto, I would rent a room at the Comfort Hotel located on 15 Charles Street East, just East of Yonge and Charles.

Standing at the beginning of the Street that the Comfort Hotel is on, on the corner of Yonge Street and Charles, looking south at Yonge at night, really gives you an idea of the energy of the city I love, Toronto.

If you keep going North of Charles on Yonge Street you will find one of the main subway lines in the city, the Danforth – Bloor line. This subway station can help you get to a lot of different highlights of Toronto including Toronto’s Greek Town by taking the East Subway to Chester. If you need to use a public washroom, you can find one on the way to the East line, by the magazine vendor.

Just north of there on the next block at 789 Yonge Street is the Toronto Reference Library. The Toronto Reference Library is quite large, with lots of computers offering Full Access Internet for free. I think the information commons, just to the right of the main entrance for the library looks so absolutely high tech, and modern. Truly a different look then when I was in school frequenting this library. I enjoy books very much and so if I were a tourist in the area of the library, I would pop in for at least a quick visit. Public Washrooms are located on the second floor towards the North West area of the library if you need to use them. And although the information commons is the most concentrated number of computers with Full Internet Access, there are other computers with Full Internet Access located in other areas of the library also.

If you continue North on Yonge Street to the Yonge and Eglinton area your are passing through the midtown part of Yonge Street. Click here for information about Midtown Yonge Street.

The above video gives you an idea of what it was like on New Years 2008 walking north of Dundas on Yonge Street. The video by YouTube member siqbal is entitled "Happy New Year - Toronto - 2008".
