Greek Town: Toronto-DanforthTASTE OF THE DANFORTH (August 7 th – 9 th) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taste_of_the_Danforth This is North America’s Premier Greek Festival and one of Toronto’s best multicultural events! I live in the Greek Town area and I love it. Greek Town on the Danforth is one of the best areas of Toronto. Lots of Greek food, bars, some bozouki clubs and lots of clothing stores. Greek Town on the Danforth truly shows the life and energy of Toronto especially in the summer and on the week-ends. If you are bringing a car, be prepared for a bit of frustration trying to get a parking spot on a Friday or Saturday night. Best is take the Bloor Danforth line to Chester station then get out and walk east along Danforth. Great casual dining places to eat on the Danforth include Mezes, Pan, Omonia, Astoria and Trapezzi. Trapezzi is a great place to party too on Friday nights after 11pm. For something quick, Greek and great to eat visit Athens Pastries Pies at 509 Danforth Avenue, just a few doors east of Trapezzi Their pies are amazing! Try their cheese pie, I am pretty sure for under $4.00 you will have no regrets. Also great, Louis Meat Market for gyros, real authentic greek style, with fries in the gyros wrap. For a good bar with relatively inexpensive food and drinks for Toronto, check out Brass Taps. Great for a Friday or Saturday night out is Myth which is across the street from the Chester subway station on the South side of the Danforth at 417 Danforth Avenue. On Friday nights they have a “Live Bouzouki Night”. On Saturday night the DJ plays Modern Greek Music. Great clothes and accessories can be found as you walk the Danforth from Chester east to Pape too. Some notable clothing stores include FiveOSeven clothing, located at 496 Danforth Avenue and Maxi a Boutique at 575 Danforth Avenue. Over the years some suprisingly big food corporations have moved in to the area. The area now has a Tim Hortons and a Swiss Chalet, pretty non-greek but there are not only Greek Restaurants on the Danforth. No need to panic if you need a great cup of coffee, on the Danforth. Before the Tim Hortons came to the Danforth, Starbucks already made a good home in Greek Town, and the Frappes, expressos and cappucino's are flowing in many of the Danforth's cafes and restaurants. Whatever you coffee preferneces, chances are you can more than satisfy your coffee requirements in Greek Town. Greek Town has parades throughout the year and has it’s most popular event in August called Taste of the Danforth. Taste of the Danforth is so popular at times, it seems there is not enough room for you to move. The Danforth is closed and everyone is invited to the Taste of the Danforth party. Live music, even more food than usual and greek dancing done in traditional greek dress helps you understand why the event is so popular. Check out my video of greek dancing in traditional dress from Taste of the Danforth 2005:
Which Greek will forget Euro 2004 - the European Soccer Competition - The Danforth went crazy!!!! If you have time watch this awesome video it's an 8 minute and 36 second video of Greece's parade to victor of Euro 2004 - with video clips of probably the Greek Town's biggest party ever!
