Church and Wellesley - Toronto’s Gay Village

Toronto Pride Week Festivities are very popular with both locals and visitors to Toronto. The above is a video I took at the Toronto Pride Parade in 2008 from my Yonge and Wellesley view.

Visit the Toronto Pride Week website for more information about Pride Toronto

Slack's (previously known as Slack Alice's) is to the North near the start of Toronto's Gay Village. Slack's is the very popular Lesbian bar open to all on Church Street. Friday and Saturday nights are booming at Slack's. Be prepared to pay a $5.00 cover and stand in line if you are arriving after 11:00 pm. The DJ’s at Slack's are awesome. The music on Friday and Saturday Night is definitely worth the trip to Slack’s. Slack’s also serves up some good food.

Just a few doors south from Slack’s is A La Turque a fast food restaurant serving Turkish Cuisine. The people who work there are very nice, and their food is great and cheap too. The Chicken wrap is best for me for under $5.00. Added bonus, you can tell this place is really clean.

Byzantium just south of Church and Wellesley (with the green sign) is very cool. Great dance music on the week-end, nice long bar.

I like the Village Rainbow Cafe on the East North Corner of Church and Maitland. It’s a great restaurant that has been in the heart of the village for as long as I can remember. I like having brunch there; the eggs florentine rock. Also, great to grab a seat at and a beer when for example at the height of Pride's evening celebrations there seems to be no hope in getting a beer on Church as all the bars have a line up.

Woody's on the next block south of rainbow is very established and busy, especially busy on the week-ends.

Zelda's and Crews and Tango have closed down .... OMG ....yes it's true.

South of Woody's at Church and Alexander is where the area that is predominatley known as the Church street Gay Village ends. You can find a statue of Alexander Wood, a famous Canadian public servant and business man who lived from 1772 - 1844 on the north west corner. You can also find Timothy's for a non alcoholic beverage on this block and a major bank if you need it. Timothy's is the new psuedo communal gathering place on Church having pretty much replaced the Second Cup that use to be at Church and Wellesley and at the time was a very popular gathering place. Timothy's is very busy especially in the summer once the bars on the strip close.

Hair of the Dog at Church and Wood is 1 block south on the north east corner. It is a very convienient location for a something to eat if you are driving before heading to Crews and Tango for some dancing. There is a parking lot right across the street from Hair of the Dog.
