Quick History Toronto became incorporated as the City of Toronto in 1834. At the time of incorporation, Toronto's population was 9 254 (according to the city of Toronto's official website toronto.ca). Toronto now has around 2.5 million people living here, roughly 5.5 million if you count all of the Greater Toronto Area. The Greater Toronto area consists of the City of Toronto and the Regional Municipality of Durham, the Regional Municipality of Halton, the Regional Municipality of Peel and the Regional Municipality of York. In 1998, East York, North York, York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, and what was before known as Toronto (basically, the downtown core), became amalgamated into the new City of Toronto.
Toronto's CN Tower was the tallest free-standing structure in the world for over 30 years until September 12, 2007 when it's height was surpassed by the Dubai Tower (Burj Dubai) still under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
